Ruling CPI(M) registered a massive win in by-election to Amarpur Assembly constituency in south Tripura. BJP has made a dent by coming second while candidates from Congress, regional parties and independents lost their deposit.
Parimal Debnath of CPI(M) defeated his nearest rival Ranjit Das from BJP by 10,872 votes at end of counting on Tuesday. The election to Amarpur assembly segment was held on February 13 after CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Acharjee was axed on moral turpitude charge in December last.
CPI(M) got 20,355 and the BJP 9,758 votes followed by Congress 1,231 and regional IPFT 1,623 votes. The
constituency was held by Congress till 1998 and thereafter CPI(M) maintained its prominence in the area.
The left front and CPI(M) state committee congratulated people of Amarpur for their ‘massive support’ and defeating parties with anti-people policies. They said the victory reaffirmed peoples’ confidence on the Left government which is engaged in huge development and welfare activities.
Congress which is reduced to a negligible force and even lagged far behind the BJP, has accepted the outcome. “We did not hope to face such result, but would introspect”, PCC(I) president Birajit Sinha commented.
