Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting to review India's preparedness for monkeypox as global cases surge, emphasising preventive measures despite no recent cases in the country.
JP Nadda chaired the meeting with officials and directed them to put in place cautionary measures to prevent and control the spread of the disease. As of now, not a single
case of monkeypox virus has been reported in India.
During the meeting, it was assessed that the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low for India at present.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) had earlier declared monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in July 2022 and subsequently revoked the same in May 2023.
