Nation's economy witnessing expansion following series of measures like GST: Arun Jaitley

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the nation’s economy is witnessing expansion following a series of measures like the Goods and Services Tax. In his address at the annual meeting of the Tamil magazine 'Thuglak' in Chennai last evening, he said the taxpayers base and tax collections are also widening due to the initiatives of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Defending the demonetisation move as the one to curb



black money, the Finance Minister said it was a difficult decision, adding only Prime Minister Modi had the courage to do it. 

He said the Union Government has made those who try to violate tax provisions to understand that tax evasion is not possible. Mr Jaitley noted that the honest taxpayers are forced to pay higher taxes due to tax evaders, and said, once the taxpayer base expands enough, the tax rate could come down.
