NDRF deploys four teams in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: National Disaster Management Authority (NDRF) has pre-deployed its four teams in Tamil Nadu after the State Commissioner for Revenue Administration's request following the alert issued by IMD, regarding the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.

According to a statement issued by the NDRF, one team each has been deployed in Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu district and two teams in Madurai district. NDRF also said that all the teams were self-contained and equipped with flood rescue equipment, collapsed structure search and rescue equipment, appropriate communication equipment and PPE kits.

The North-East Monsoon in Tamil Nadu has been vigorous bringing a spate of widespread rains. The Met Department has predicted that a low pressure is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal tomorrow. It is likely to move towards the North Tamil Nadu coast in the next 48 hours resulting in an active rain spell for another three days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister M. K. Stalin yesterday and assured all help from



the Centre.  Mr Stalin appealed for more funds under disaster management as the state had already exhausted the funds under the category on tackling COVID-19 pandemic.

With the water levels from the reservoirs around the city reaching the brim, excess water has been released from yesterday afternoon.

Fifteen senior officials of the State Government have been nominated to monitor relief and rescue work and monitor water levels. The State Government has announced a one-day holiday for Government offices other than essential ones.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the private establishments either to declare a holiday or follow the work from home procedure. The Government will also conduct medical camps in shelters to avert spurt in any disease.  

One hundred and sixty camps are set up in Chennai to shelter people living in low-lying areas. Round-the-clock vigil is maintained at the State Disaster Control Centre in Chennai.
