In Tamil Nadu, delta farmers in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam have welcomed the advent of north-east monsoon rain.
Chennai Met Director Balachandran announced the advent of north east monsoon in the state yesterday. Isolated rain has been recorded in southern districts of Tirunelveli, Kannya Kumari and central districts of Tiruchirapalli and Pudukottai. The arrival of northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu has brought cheers to delta farmers as they need water till January
28 to save samba crops.
The water level in Mettur Dam is coming down daily and has reached 45 feet. The inflow is very low and is just above 100 cusecs. The PWD authorities have reduced the release of water from 12,000 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs from Mettur for delta irrigation. Mettur dam water release is expected to be stopped completely soon as monsoon rain started in delta region. The met office has forecast that north east monsoon this year is most likely to be normal.
