Notifications for the
single-phase Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala will be
issued today. The states will go to the polls on the 16th of next month. The
last date for filing of nominations is the 29th of this month, while candidates
can withdraw their candidature till the 2nd of next month. Single-phase polling
was announced for 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, 30-member Puducherry Assembly
and 140-member Kerala Assembly.

Bengal Assembly, which has 294 members, is being held in six phases. Over 79
per cent polling was recorded in the violence-marred third phase yesterday. The
polling was held in 62 constituencies. One person was killed in Murshidabad,
while many others were injured at various places including Burdwan. 126-member
Assam Assembly went to the polls in 2 phases. Counting of votes for all the 5
states will take place on the 19th of next month.
