A group of karate-trained girls in the city thrashed and handed over to the police five youths, who allegedly passed lewd remarks and tried to molest them during Vijaydashami celebrations on Tuesday night.
“We have arrested five youths for eve-teasing. Some of their friends are at large. We are trying to nab them, too,” said Satyabrata Bhoi, DCP, Bhubaneswar.
The girls, who attend the Utkal Karate School, were visiting a row of Puja pandals when at 10pm they came across of a group of boys Baramunda Chhak who allegedly made lewd comments.
Ignoring them, the girls moved to Nayapalli, but were followed by the accused. The boys allegedly tried to molest two of the girls.
The girls decided to take matters into their own hands and deployed certain karate moves they were familiar with. The accused tried to

were subdued by the girls’ male colleagues who arrived by this time.
Few of the accused fled the spot but the girls managed to hold onto five of them and handed them over to the police.
On Wednesday morning, the girls’ karate coach, Hariprasad, said: “I have come to give a written complaint against the boys who misbehaved with some of my students. Eve-teasing is nowadays rampant in the capital city, and the girls should react to it violently.”
“Initially we ignored the boys. But when they followed us and started misbehaving, we thrashed them to teach them a lesson and handed them over to the police,” said one of the girls, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
The incident comes days after another student of the karate school, Chinmayee Bhuyan, thrashed three chain-snatchers at the Market Building area.
