Over 3232 kilometres of the India-Bangladesh border have been covered with a fence out of over 4096 km of total length. Giving this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that the fencing helps ensure a crime-free border by effectively addressing the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals, and trafficking.

The minister added that it

has been conveyed to the government of Bangladesh that with regard to security measures at the border, including for fencing, India observes all protocols and agreements between the two governments and between the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh. He said only around 864 km of the India-Bangladesh border remains to be fenced, which includes a length of over 174 km of non-feasible gap.
