Over 6 lakh affected across 19 districts after Assam flood worsens

The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Monday, affecting more than 6.44 lakh people across 19 districts, according to an official bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The Brahmaputra River breached its highest flood level at Nematighat in Jorhat district, with eight rivers flowing above the danger mark.

Rescue operations in full swing

Various agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, army, air force, and local administration, are involved in extensive rescue operations. A total of 6,44,128 people are affected, with the worst-hit districts being Lakhimpur (1,43,983 people), Dhemaji (1,01,333 people), and Cachar (66,195 people).

Casualties and displacement

The death toll from this year's floods, storms, and landslides has reached 45, with



one more fatality reported and another person missing. In Dhemaji, nine individuals were air-lifted by the air force, while army and paramilitary personnel conducted rescue operations in Tinsukia. Additionally, 1,293 people and 1,952 animals were rescued by 64 boats.

Relief efforts

A total of 8,142 displaced people are taking shelter in 72 relief camps, with another 64 relief distribution centers operational. Significant infrastructure damage, including to embankments, roads, and bridges, has been reported.

Government response

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the critical flood situation due to heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured all necessary assistance.
