Parliament adjourned sine die

Parliament yesterday adjourned sine die before its scheduled time in view of the Novel Corona virus outbreak. The sittings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were curtailed by nine days. Earlier, the  two houses were scheduled to work till 3rd of next month during the second part of the Budget Session of Parliament.  

 

In his valedictory address, Lok Speaker Om Birla said, during the Budget Session which began on 31st of January, 16 legislations were introduced and 13 bills were passed. Mr Birla said, the members sat over 21 hours more than the scheduled time to finish the business.

 

Earlier, the Lower House expressed gratitude to those engaged in essential services including doctors, police personnel and media people who are in the front line against the fight with Corona virus. The house also expressed grief over the killing of 17 security personnel in Naxal attack in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. The members also observed two minutes' silence as mark of respect to



them. 

In Rajya Sabha, while delivering the valedictory address, Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu said, the Upper House registered over 70 per cent productivity during the entire Budget Session. He said, 249 issues have been raised by the members and several bills were discussed and passed. He urged the members to go back to their states for guidance of the people in the wake of the Corona virus. 

Earlier, the house, bid farewell to 57 retiring members. They include Vijay Goel, Prabhat Jha and Satya Narayan Jatia of BJP, Hussain Dalwai, Motilal Vora and M. V. Rajeev Gowda of Congress, Vijila Sathyanadh of AIADMK. Speaking on the occasion, Leader of the House Thawarchand Gehlot and Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the Upper House will miss the retiring members. The Chairman wished for the good health of retiring members and expressed hope that they will continue to serve the people. The house also paid homage to the security personnel who were killed in Naxal attack in Sukuma.
