Police sources said Unidentified persons hurled petrol bombs
at three places near the Meenakshi Amman Temple on Tuesday.. the first bottle
was thrown towards a public urinal on North Chithirai Street, some 50 metres
away from the temple compound wall, around 4pm and the second was thrown just
opposite to it around 6.30 pm. Both the bottles broke into pieces, but did not
cause a fire. One of the bottles burst into flames, creating fear among
residents and tourists. The police and local people put out the fire. None was
injured People
did not take these seriously went about their business. But when the third one,
thrown minutes after the second one, went into flames, there was panic. Resident
near the spot where the blast occurred, said, "suddenly it was very noisy
outside. I was performing pooja inside my house. When I came out people were
running in all directions out of fear," he said. A large number of
policemen from various wings were at the spot. Later, deputy commissioner of
police, Madurai city (law and order), Bandi Gangadhar visited the spot and
conducted preliminary investigations.
