Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hosted US Vice President JD Vance at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence in Delhi. Both leaders welcomed the "significant progress" in the bilateral trade deal, which is being discussed in the shadow of US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff measures that are now on pause till July.
India and the US agreed in February to work on the first phase of a trade deal to be concluded late this year, with a view to reaching bilateral trade worth USD 500 billion by 2030. The US is India's largest trading partner and their two-way bilateral trade reached USD 129 billion in 2024, with a USD 45.7 billion surplus in favour of India, US government trade data show.
During the meeting, PM Modi and Vance, who are on his first official visit to India, reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation. They also exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest, and called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward, according to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The two leaders noted continued efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy,
defence, strategic technologies and other areas, the statement said.
PM Modi extended his best wishes to Vance, Second Lady Usha Vance and their children for a pleasant and productive stay in India. Usha Vance and their three children - Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel - were also present at the bilateral meeting.
The Prime Minister conveyed his warm greetings to US President Donald Trump and said he looked forward to his visit to India later this year, the MEA statement read. India is set to host the Quad summit later this year and Trump is likely to attend the key meeting.
During the meeting, PM Modi fondly recalled his visit to Washington DC in January and his fruitful discussions with Trump, which laid down the roadmap for close cooperation between India and the US, leveraging the strengths of Make America Great Again (MAGA) and Viksit Bharat 2047.
Images shared by the Prime Minister's Office showed PM Modi welcoming Vance and his family. The two boys, who wore kurtas during their visit to Akshardham temple in the morning, were seen wearing bandhgala suits and Nehru jackets, while Vance's daughter Mirabel was wearing a golden frock.
