Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated or laid the foundation stone of 15 airport projects across the country which are worth more than Rs 9,800 crore.
The projects include 12 new terminal buildings for Pune, Kolhapur, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, Moradabad, Shravasti and Adampur airports, said a report by PTI news agency.
Each airport now has a new terminal building. For Delhi, the existing Terminal 1 was expanded to accommodate more passengers.
PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of three new terminal buildings for the airports in Kadapa, Hubballi and Belagavi.
A statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said the 12 new terminal buildings will have a combined capacity to serve 620 lakh passengers annually.
Further, once the three new terminals are completed, the airports will be able to accommodate 95 lakh passengers per year.
The terminal buildings have state-of-the-art passenger amenities and are equipped with various sustainability features, including a double insulated roofing system,
provision of canopies for energy saving, LED lighting etc, said the statement.
The designs of the airports were influenced and derived from the common elements of heritage structures of the particular state and city where they are located to reflect the local culture and heritage of the region.
While inaugurating the new terminal building virtually from Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh, PM Modi said the initiative will make air travel easier and accessible for the "common citizens of the country".
He pointed out that the construction of the new terminal at Gwalior airport was completed in 16 months.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of five major National Highway projects worth Rs 11,500 crore and 12 railway projects across Uttar Pradesh worth Rs 8,200 crore.
In total, PM Modi launched development projects worth more than Rs 42,000 crore across the country.
He was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other BJP leaders as he visited Azamgarh district from where he launched the projects and addressed a rally.
