Prime Minister Narendra Modi today performed ground-breaking ceremony for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project via video-conferencing.
The Metro Projects will provide an environment friendly ‘Mass Rapid Transit System’ to these cities. Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II is 28.25 kilometres long with two corridors. The estimated cost of phase two of Ahmedabad Metro project is 5384 crore rupees.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Modi said, Ahmedabad and Surat are receiving very important gifts today as Metro will further strengthen the connectivity in two major business centres of the country.
The Prime Minister said the country is developing ultra-modern transport systems for cities by integrating bus, metro, and rail transport systems as one entity. They won't ply as single entities anymore but work as
collective system, complementary to each other.
Mr.Modi said there was a time when there was no modern thinking in the nation, regarding metro network. There was no metro policy and as a result, there were different kinds of metros in different cities. Best example to see difference between the approach of previous governments and the work of the current government is the expansion of metro rail network across country.
Before 2014, only 225 kms of metro line became operational in 10-12 yrs. In the last 6 years, over 450 kms of metro network became operational and work is underway on over 1000 kms of metro network in 27 cities across the nation, as of now.
Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also took part in the event along with other dignitaries.
