PM Modi to address World Bio-Fuel Day conference today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a diverse gathering consisting of farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, students, government officials and legislators in New Delhi today to mark the World Biofuel Day 2018. 

Biofuels can help reduce import dependency on crude oil. They can contribute to a cleaner environment, generate additional income for farmers and generate employment in rural areas. 

World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and to highlight the various efforts made by the Government in the



biofuel sector. 

The biofuels programme is also in synergy with the government initiatives for Make in India, Swachh Bharat and enhancing farmers’ income. As a result of the efforts of the government, ethanol blending in petrol has increased from 38 crore litres in the ethanol supply in 2013-14, to an estimated 141 crore litres in the ethanol supply year 2017-18. 

The government also approved the National Policy on Biofuels in June this year. The policy has the objective of reaching 20 per cent ethanol-blending and five per cent biodiesel-blending by the year 2030.
