Prime Minister Narendra Modi will conduct an aerial survey of flood-affected regions of Kerala today. Mr Modi will also have a high-level meeting with the Chief Minister and other officials to take stock of the situation.
Prime Minister arrived in Thiruvananthapuram last night. He was received by Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his Cabinet colleagues at the airport.
Earlier in the day, Mr Modi had a telephonic conversation with the Chief Minister regarding the flood situation. Both leaders discussed the situation across the state and reviewed rescue operations.
The flood situation in Kerala continues to remain grim with thousands of people still stranded in Alappuzha, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the most critical situation is prevailing in Chengannur in Alappuzha and Chalakkudy in Thrissur where people are trapped in large numbers.
The strong flow of water in these regions is the greatest obstruction hindering the rescue missions, he added. Mr Vijayan said more helicopters and big boats will be deployed for rescue operations today.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sanctioned the extra choppers, as people marooned in Chengannur and Chalakudy could only be airlifted to safety. More from our correspondent
