New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) at YashoBhumi in New Delhi today. In line with the theme of India’s G20 Presidency, the theme of the P20 Summit is Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future. During this two-day global event, 25 speakers, 10 Deputy Speakers along with 50 members of Parliament among others are going to participate.
The Pan African Parliament will also participate in the G20 event for the first time in India. The Ninth P20 reflects a glorious journey of collective vision of Presiding Officers of Parliaments of G20 Nations which had taken root in 2010 in a Consultative meeting.
During the two-day summit, four high-level sessions will be organized, which are accelerating Sustainable Development Goals, Sustainable Energy Transition, women-led development and transformation in People’s lives through Public Digital Platforms. These sessions will bring together G-20 members and guest countries for wide-ranging discussions on how Parliaments can effectively advance the objectives of the P-20.
India aims to provide consensus-based solutions to complex global issues towards a more inclusive, peaceful and equitable world during the P20 Summit with the spirit of the theme Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
Before the inauguration of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit a pre-summit event, the Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) held at YashoBhumi Yesterday.
Inaugurating the event, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that in today's contemporary times, climate change and its impact is deeply interlinked with the common future of humanity. He added that it is only natural that on India's initiative, environment-related issues have been unanimously placed at the center of the discussions during the P-20 conference.
Drawing attention towards the detrimental effects of climate change, he said that in today's time no country is untouched by the impact of climate change. He underlined that it is the need of the hour to confront climate change saying the Mission Life Style is a comprehensive approach to
environmental protection which empowers every person to reduce, reuse and recycle.
He added that it is necessary that everyone adopts such an approach in their lifestyle causes no harm to the environment. He observed that the LiFE Mission has given the world a new way to deal with contemporary challenges including climate change, sustainable development, health security, food security and energy security which has now become a global movement.
Emphasizing on individual responsibility, he said that only policies and laws are not enough to deal with the problem of climate change, rather everyone needs to contribute collectively by modifying their everyday routine.
Speakers of Parliaments of Australia, UAE and Bangladesh called on Lok Sabha Speaker on the sidelines of 9th P20 Summit. Mr. Birla expressed gratitude to Australia for supporting India's priorities and initiatives during G20 Summit.
He also praised Australia for supporting India's initiative for inclusion of African Union in G20. He also noted that recent visits by Prime Ministers of both countries have given a new dimension to bilateral relations between India and Australia and mutual cooperation has further deepened and infused new energy.
During his meeting with Acting President, Pan African Parliament, Ashebir Woldegiorgis Gayo, Mr Birla congratulated him for inclusion of the African Union in G20. The leaders discussed several important issues and explored opportunities for further collaboration between the two Parliaments.
On this occasion, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh underlined that Mission LiFE seeks to channel the efforts of individuals and communities into a global mass movement of positive behavioural change. He urged the legislators to be the guardians of environment and the torchbearers of a sustainable legacy and regenerative future.
Presiding officers of Parliaments of participating G20 nations also made interventions during the discussion. The Lok Sabha Speaker also held several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event today.
