In Kerala polling for by-election in the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency began at 7 am amidst tight security. The polling will continue till 6 p.m. in all the 1,175 polling stations in seven Assembly constituencies in the district. As many as 13.12 lakh electorate in the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency will choose their new representative in Parliament. Besides the three major contenders of UDF, LDF and NDA, there are six other independents also in the fray.

The election commission has deployed 1,760 Electronic Voting Machines and 10 specialist engineers for the poll. Security has been beefed up throughout the constituency. Four companies of central



security forces, besides the police, have been deployed. The authorities have identified 49 critical and 31 politically sensitive booths. 

The polling in all the sensitive stations would be videographed. Besides this, 35 booths have been identified as model polling stations for setting up all the infrastructural facilities, including ramp and wheelchairs for differently- abled voters. There are 21 booths which are managed by women officers. Of the 13.12 lakh electorate, women outnumber men. 
According to the latest electoral roll, there are 6,56,470 female and 6,56,273 male voters in Malappuram LS segment."
