President Droupadi Murmu yesterday conferred the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities to 33 exemplary individuals and institutions on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 in New Delhi.
 
Addressing the gathering at the event, President Murmu said that today’s award winners are being recognized as role models in front of society. She added that by emulating them, other individuals and institutions can move forward towards empowerment of Divyangjan.
  
The President said that promoting entrepreneurship among disabled people, developing their skills, providing them with employment, offering preference in purchasing their products, and providing marketing facilities will enhance their leadership capabilities.

President Murmu emphasized that by following their example, other individuals and institutions can move forward in the direction of empowering persons with disabilities. She noted that today’s award winners are not just a goal of inspiration, but also a source of inspiration.

She highlighted the role of the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan in providing universal accessibility to persons with disabilities, reminding everyone that people with disabilities need empathy, not sympathy.
 
The President said that it is the duty of the entire humanity to make



all Divyangs feel comfortable and equal. Providing barrier-free environment to Divyangs in every way should be the priority of the society.
 
She also mentioned that this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” chosen to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, will enhance leadership abilities among persons with disabilities.

The President said that the opportunity to work, like any other person, gives persons with disabilities a sense of self-confidence and the desire to live a meaningful life.
 
On the occasion,  Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar unveiled sixteen transformative initiatives aimed at enriching the lives of persons with disabilities.
 
These initiatives span inclusivity, innovation, and technology, reinforcing the department’s commitment to empowerment. Some of the key initiatives include the launch of the ‘Kadam Knee Joint, ‘Pathways to Access: Part III, and the Braille Book Portal.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kumar underlined that the government is committed to empower Divyagjans. He said that persons with disabilities are extensively contributing to the development of the country.
