New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu yesterday felicitated the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards, and National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2023 at a function in New Delhi. National Energy Conservation Awards aim to raise awareness about energy efficiency and its conservation.
The function was organized on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day. The Day is celebrated on 14th December every year to spread the message of the importance of conserving energy and to showcase the achievements of the nation in energy efficiency and conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, the President emphasized optimal utilization of available natural resources which in turn help meet the energy requirement. She stated that along with optimal utilization, all stakeholders will have to promote energy efficiency and innovation. She said, in 21st century, the world community should remain active in enhancing energy efficiency and using renewable energy.
President Murmu said that India has emerged as a responsible and leading country in the field of clean energy. She added that India is promoting clean coal technologies so that the processes of coal extraction and use become more efficient and environmentally friendly. She mentioned that it is the result of its commitment to the environment that India has moved from 30th to 7th place in the ranking of 'Climate
Change Performance Index' in ten years.
The President said that efforts like 'Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022' and 'Renewable Purchase Obligations' will also play an important role in India's journey to achieve the target of 'Nationally Determined Contributions' by the year 2030. She stated that in line with LiFE- Lifestyle for Environment, India has now taken the initiative of 'Green credit' which encourages environmental protection practices related to our traditions. She expressed confidence that these efforts will prove important in achieving India's clean energy and environment goals.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of Power R K Singh said that India has emerged as one of the leaders in energy transition in the world. He said, energy transition and climate change are important issues before the world. He said, climate change is posing a threat to planet which collective efforts are required to combat the challenge.
Mr. Singh informed that India has achieved its Nationally Determined Target of 40 percent of the installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources nine years ahead of the target of 2030 and also achieved the target of reduction in emission intensity by 33 percent in 2019, eleven years ahead of the scheduled target.
On the occasion, Minister of State for Power Krishan Pal was also present.
