President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to promulgate an Ordinance to set up a committee to run the Medical Council of India, MCI, until Parliament passes legislation to replace the body with a new commission.
Speaking to media in New Delhi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, the Cabinet cleared the Ordinance yesterday. He said, since the term of the MCI's elected body is ending
soon, a need was felt for it to be run by a committee of eminent individuals. Mr Jaitley said, professionals of great eminence will be part of the committee. The Board of Governors who would run the MCI include Niti Aayog member Dr V K Paul and AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria. A Bill to replace the Council with a National Medical Commission is pending in Parliament.
