The Maharashtra government on Monday officially approved the renaming of Pune airport to 'Tukaram Maharaj Airport' in honour of the revered 17th-century saint. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held today.
This move aims to pay tribute to Sant Tukaram Maharaj, a prominent spiritual figure in Maharashtra's history, known for his devotional poetry and influence on the Bhakti movement.
Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had previously recommended renaming
the Pune airport and stated that he will seek approval from the centre.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said on X that the first step towards renaming the international airport in Pune as Jagadguru Santshrestha Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport' has been taken today and the proposal given by us has been approved by the state government.
The proposal will be sent to the central government and cabinet, who will take the final decision on renaming the airport.
