Sangrur: Punjab Police yesterday lathi-charged farmers and farm labourers who were protesting outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's residence in Sangrur. The farmers were holding peaceful protests when they were lathi-charged. According to sources, some farmers were also detained by the police.
The farmers were holding protests over demands for enhancing the minimum wages upto 700 rupees per day under the Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. (MGNREGA), 33 percent representation for Scheduled Castes in village cooperative societies and enhancement in the land acquisition relief.
The demand of farmers also include compensation for the death of their cattles due to lumpy skin desease, the release of reimbursement for their damaged crops and cancellation of FIRs registered against them for burning crops residue.
