Congress national president Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting in Tirupati on Friday as part of AP Congress’ bus yatra demanding special category status (SCS) to the state.
Gandhi’s visit coincides with the completion of five years of clearing of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill. It also marks the completion of five years of the SCS promise made by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the Rajya Sabha floor. People in the know say the issue of special category status will play a major role in the state in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
Choosing Tirupati for Rahul Gandhi’s meeting is seen as a political strategy as the venue will Gandhi a chance to attack PM Modi for allegedly going back on the promise of SCS proclaimed in the holy town.
Last year, Chandrababu Naidu too had held a meeting in
Tirupati and played video clips of Modi’s speech in 2014 during the election campaign, attacking Modi for not keeping the promise after becoming PM.
Now, a year later, Gandhi will probably take the same route. The Cong president promised SCS to AP and pledged to put his signature first on granting of SCS to the State if he is voted to power.
Congress leaders, as part of their bus yatra, have been highlighting upon Modi’s denial of the SCS and non-implementation of the bifurcation benefits including railway zone, steel plant, Dugarajapatnam Port and grant of special financial assistance to the four Rayalaseema and three north coastal districts. Supported by the TDP, the Congress is seeing Gandhi’s meeting as a crucial weapon to damage to BJP before the elections.
