Congress President Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding the Women's Reservation Bill be passed in the monsoon session of the Parliament. He urged Modi to help pass the bill in the upcoming session with full support from the Congress.
In the letter, Rahul Gandhi said that the bill has been "stalled on one pretext or the other in the Lok Sabha for over eight years now". Slamming the BJP's delay in passing the bill, he further said that even though "the Congress party has been unwavering in its commitment to the bill, the BJP appears to have had second thoughts even though this was one of its key promises in its 2014 manifesto".
"Our PM says he’s a crusader for women’s empowerment? Time for him to rise above party politics, walk-his-talk & have the
Women’s Reservation Bill passed by Parliament. The Congress offers him its unconditional support. Attached is my letter to the PM," Rahul tweeted. He also attached two pictures of his letter to PM Modi.
As per the bill, 33 per cent or one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative Assemblies must be reserved for women. Further, from the reserved seats, a third of those should be reserved for women belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Rahul's letter comes amid remarks from the PM alleging that the Congress is a party of the 'Muslim men'. "I have read in a newspaper that Congress president has said that Congress is a party of Muslims. I am not surprised as when Manmohan Singh was PM, he had said that Muslims have the first right over natural resources," Modi was quoted.
