Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu today said, Railways is reducing dependence on coal and moving towards cleaner fuels.Speaking at a conference in New Delhi Mr. Prabhu said, as both traffic and freights are going to increase in the future, railways face twin challenges of mitigating the Green House Gas emissions and meeting the market demands.

Apart from reiterating his ministry's commitment to bring in additional traffic and freight,



the minister stressed on Agriculture and Agro processing, as promising sectors where railways could venture and make a difference to the lives of farmers. 

There has been a decrease in use of coal world over as developed nations have moved to alternative fuels. Coal constitutes a huge chunk of Railways fuel consumption and Government is exploring measures to decrease coal dependence.
