In Kerala, heavy rains continue in many parts, especially in the central and northern districts of the state. Landslides have been reported in Wayanad, Idukki and Palakkad districts. In Wayanad, a landslide has been reported in the Mundakkayyil area during the early hours of this morning. Eight persons have lost their lives in the landslide so far. The death toll is likely to rise. 40 injured persons have been admitted to the hospital.
Attamala and Mundakkayil areas remain completely cut off from the rest of the district. Reports said five persons including a one-year-old child have lost their lives so far. With heavy rains continuing in Kerala, the IMD has issued Red Alerts in the northern districts of Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, indicating extremely heavy rainfall. Orange Alert has been issued for the districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad.
The Mundakkayil and
Attamala areas in Wayanad district remain completely cut off and efforts are on to rescue those who are trapped there. NDRF personnel have been deployed in the region and rescue efforts are continuing. The state government has sought help from the IAF and two helicopters from the Sulur airbase in Coimbatore are expected to reach Wayanad soon to airlift those trapped in the region. Heavy rains are hampering rescue efforts. 22 persons injured in the landslide have been admitted to a private medical college hospital in Meppady.
The authorities have declared a holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges in Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Palakkad, Wayanad and Thrissur. In Kozhikode, a holiday has been declared for all schools, but colleges have been exempted. A Yellow Alert is in place in eight districts in the state, indicating isolated heavy rainfall.
