Rajiv Kumar, the senior-most member of the Election Commission, took charge as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the country.
The first major task for Kumar, who will remain in this post till February 2025, will be to hold the elections of the President and the Vice President, slated for July-August.
The 2024 Lok Sabha polls, several assembly elections and Rajya Sabha elections will also be conducted under the watch of Kumar.
The
notification of his appointment was issued in the government gazette on May 12, 2022.
Kumar has been part of the poll panel as an election commissioner since September 1, 2020. He succeeds Sushil Chandra, who demitted office on Saturday evening.
Kumar will hold the post from May 15, 2022 to February 18, 2025. Kumar's 65th birthday is on February 19, 2025. According to the constitution, the term of election commissioners is six years or till the age of 65 years, whichever comes first.
