Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has requested all political parties to ensure that the positive momentum of the last session of Parliament is maintained during the Winter Session. Addressing a meeting of leaders of different parties at his residence in Delhi, Mr Naidu informed that various events have been planned to celebrate the landmark 250th session of Rajya Sabha beginning today.
He said, since its inception in 1952, the Upper House has come a long way, contributing to the socio-economic transformation of the country but still has miles to go towards proper functioning. Mr Naidu said, from passing the Hindu Marriage and Divorce Bill in 1952 to the Muslim Women
(Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill in 2019 (Triple Talaq Bill), from imposition of additional excise duty on dhotis in 1953 to introduction of GST in 2017, Rajya Sabha has come a long way in addressing the challenges faced and meeting the requirements of the nation from time to time.
On the first day of the Rajya Sabha today, obituary references will be made to its sitting and former members, who passed away recently. The members are Dr Jagannath Mishra, Arun Jaitley, Sukhdev Singh Libra, Ram Jethmalani, and Gurudas Dasgupta. A special discussion on the Role of Rajya Sabha in Indian Polity: Need for Reform’ will also be held.
