The Rajya Sabha yesterday referred the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019 to the Select Committee for further scrutiny.
Yesterday, during the discussion on the bill, members from the Opposition parties including Congress and others had demanded the government to send the bill to the Select Committee for wider consultation.
The members cited loopholes in the bill including related to the definition of close relatives.
Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan moved the motion to refer the bill to the Committee.
The panel will submit its report by the last day of the first week of the next Parliament Session.
The bill has the provision to constitute National Surrogacy Board, State Surrogacy Boards and appointment of appropriate authorities for regulation of the practice and process of surrogacy.
