The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested another individual, Sahil Jain, in connection with the Ranya Rao gold smuggling case for his alleged role in disposing of smuggled gold linked to the case.
Sahil Jain was produced before a magistrate at his residence late last night, after which the DRI secured four days of custody for further investigation. Officials believe his involvement could be a crucial link in uncovering the broader smuggling network.
Sources suggest that the investigation is expected to delve deeper into how the smuggled gold was circulated and whether more individuals were involved in the operation. The DRI continues its probe to dismantle the network linked to the
case.
Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at the Bengaluru airport after a thorough personal search revealed gold bars wrapped around her waist and calves with bandages and tissues. Besides, additional gold bars and cut pieces were also found in her shoes and front pockets.
The gold recovered was 24 carats and weighed 14.2 kg, valued at more than Rs 12.56 crore, and Rao has been charged under the Customs Act and the Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act.
