Rekha Gupta to take oath as Delhi CM today

Mrs Rekha Gupta will take oath as the new Chief Minister of Delhi today at the iconic Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. She met Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at Raj Niwas. She staked the claim to form the new government after her name was announced for the post at the Delhi BJP legislative party meeting last evening.

The Lieutenant Governor will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Rekha Gupta at 12:35 this afternoon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Chief ministers and deputy chief Ministers of around 20 states have also been invited to the event. 

Rekha Gupta has won the Shalimar Bagh seat in the Delhi assembly elections. She began her political journey with ABVP at the Daulat Ram College of Delhi University, in 1992. She became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union. Rekha Gupta has also served as the General Secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi.

Delhi Police has issued a traffic advisory in anticipation of large crowds during the oath-taking ceremony. Certain diversions and restrictions will be in place to manage traffic during the event.

After the announcement of Rekha Gupta’s name as the next Chief Minister of Delhi, several BJP leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah and other Union Ministers have congratulated her. Congratulating her, in a social media post, Home Minister Amit Shah said that he has full faith in Rekha Gupta. He added that BJP’s New Chief Minister in Delhi will work with dedication in the direction of the resolution taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Delhi one of the top capitals of the



world.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also congratulated Mrs Gupta. In a social media post, Mr Vaishnaw wrote that he looked forward to working with her on developing the IT ecosystem and Railways in Delhi, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan extended his wishes to Mrs Gupta. In a social media post, Mr Chouhan said that under the guidance and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will create a new history by touching new heights of progress and development.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has also extended his wishes to Mrs Gupta on being elected the leader of the BJP’s legislative.

Outgoing Delhi Chief Minster Atishi and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal have congratulated BJP leader Rekha Gupta on being elected as the new Chief Minister and expressed hope that she would fulfil all promises made during the election campaign. Rekha will be the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi.

The BJP has returned to power in Delhi after over 26 years, ending the 10-year rule of the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP.

Delhi Chief Minister designate Rekha Gupta thanked the top leadership of the BJP for entrusting her with the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, she thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She added that the Prime Minister has shown immense faith in a commoner like her and bestowed such a big responsibility.
