The Government yesterday said that 4 thousand rupees per month is being provided to the children who have lost both or either of their parents due to COVID-19.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Union Women and Child Development Secretary Indeevar Pandey said that earlier 2 thousand rupees were provided to these children. However, from 1st of this month, the amount has been hiked to 4 thousand rupees. He said the amount is being routed through the PM CARES Fund.  

Mr. Pandey said that there are a total of 4,350 children who have lost both parents or have a single parent.    

He also said that under the Child Protection Services, the child who has enrolled under the scheme will be getting four thousand rupees till he attains 18 years of age. After attaining the age of 18, the child will get 10 lakh rupees that will go into his monthly income scheme account from where they can draw the monthly



stipend, he added.

Further, he asserted that the Government will take care of the child’s education. The Secretary said, the child will be paid a scholarship till the age of 18 and even beyond. He added that if the child wants to borrow a loan for higher education, then the interest will be serviced from the PM CARES Fund.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Women and Child Development Ministry informed that it has proposed to the state cabinet to hike the amount under the Bal Sangopan Scheme for the children who have become orphans due to COVID-19 to 2,500 rupees per month from the present 1,125 rupees. 

Principal Secretary I.A. Kundan said there are 791 children in the state who have been orphaned or have lost one of their parents due to COVID-19. She said, an amount of five lakh rupees under the social security scheme has been disbursed into the bank accounts of all these children.
