Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said his Ministry is determined to make the villages poverty-free this year. Mr Chouhan said this during a review meeting on various ministry schemes with the Rural Development Minister of all States and Union Territories in New Delhi yesterday. 

The Minister highlighted the role of villages in nation-building, which will make India an ideal nation for the world. The Union Minister said the schemes of the Rural Development Ministry are a hope for the common people and a means to fulfil their dreams. He said these schemes reflect the commitment of the Central



Government towards the development of villages.

Mr Chouhan informed that 136 crore man-days have been created in MGNREGA since June last year, due to which about 54 lakh 83 thousand works have been completed in rural areas. The Central Government has also released a total of 50,467 crore rupees to the state governments.

The Minister said that 3.45 crore houses have been constructed in rural areas under the housing scheme in the last ten years. He also said that the survey work has started to identify new families and link them to the scheme.
