Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal has announced major initiatives aimed at enabling the waterways potential of Nagaland. The announcement was made during the Stakeholder’s Conference organised by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways held at Chümoukedima in Nagaland yesterday.
The conference was attended by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister, Yanthungo Patton; Tourism Minister of Nagaland, Temjen Imna Along; MP of Lok Sabha, S S Jamir; MP of Rajya Sabha, Phangnon Konyak, Vice Chairman of IWAI, Sunil Singh; and MLAs & Advisors of the Nagaland government, Commissioner & Secretary, Transportation Department of Government of Nagaland among other senior
officials from the Government of India as well as the Government of Nagaland.
Mr Sonowal also announced the development of Tizu-Zunki ( National Waterways 101), adding that Tizu Zunki River will be harnessed for the Economic Development of Nagaland, to enable Cargo & Passenger Transport.
He urged both the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Transport Department of the Government of Nagaland to work together to study navigation feasibility.
Mr Sonowal also announced initiatives to develop the immense tourism potential of Doyang River Lake with community jetties as well as study the feasibility of Ro Pax ferries. This will boost the tourism potential of the state, he added.
