The Supreme Court on Monday imposed an exemplary cost of Rs 25 lakh on a Rajasthan-based trust for filing 64 petitions in the name of public cause and wasting judicial time.
A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice J S Khehar restrained Suraz India Trust and its chairman Rajiv Dahiya from filing any PIL in future.
"Waste of judicial time is a serious issue as matters of extreme importance that are taken up lag behind because of misconceived intention of people who are not
competent to raise such issues", the bench also comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul said.
The court also directed the trust to place its order before any other court hearing its separate PIL.
The bench took grim view of the trust filing a huge number of PILs and also writing letters to the President, Prime Minister, and judges of the Supreme Court and Rajasthan High Court.
The court directed for depositing of cost within one month.
