The Supreme Court, on Monday issued notices to the governments of Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for not following its order to prevent violence in the name of protecting the cow. This comes after a plea was filed in the apex court seeking contempt proceedings against the states for not following its order, it was reported.
The three-member bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud took up the plea filed by Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, and has asked the three states to file their replies by 3
April. The bench will hear the contempt plea, along with a main writ petition filed earlier by Gandhi.
Indira Jaisingh, the senior advocate appearing for Gandhi, said that there are still incidents of violence in the name of protecting the cow in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, despite the court issuing a September 2017 order to take proper security measures.
The Supreme Court had asked these states to employ senior police officers as nodal officers in each district within a week from 6 September 2017 to take care of the problem.
