Sikkim celebrates 48th State Day today

Gangtok: Sikkim celebrates its 48th State Day today. It was on 16th May, 1975 that the erstwhile kingdom became part of India as its 22nd state. The state level celebration will be organised at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok in the presence of governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and chief minister PS Tamang. 

The programme will include civilian awards, launch of a multimedia database management system by the IPR department and a public awareness video on mobile village clinics; and release of a book titled Skill Gap Assessment Study of Sikkim by the state skill development department, among other recognitions and initiatives. 

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today greeted the people of Sikkim on their Statehood day. In a tweet, the president said that Sikkim presents a blend of modernity and unique traditions. She said the state has pioneered organic farming, enriched biodiversity and created a model for sustainable development. President said, she was touched by the warmth of people during her visit of the state last year. 

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said that Sikkim is home to beautiful mountains and rich biodiversity and it is a land of unparalleled natural beauty. He said that the state's commitment to sustainable



development, organic farming and cleanliness is truly inspirational.

Sikkim State Day is celebrated to commemorate the formation of Sikkim, as the 22nd state of India Union, in 1975. The state of Sikkim was formed by the 36th Amendment of the Constitution of India in 1975.   

Sikkim governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and chief minister PS Tamang have wished citizens on the State Day. Mr Acharya said that Sikkim’s journey since becoming part of the world’s largest democracy has been remarkable and marked by unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. 

He urged all to utilise the state’s natural and human resources sensibly to maintain the pace of development. In a message, Mr Tamang said that State Day is an occasion for introspection as to what Sikkim has accomplished and what remains to be achieved.

He highlighted the state’s transformation over the last few decades, milestones across sectors, welfare schemes, the state government’s focus on the health and education sectors, and achievements in the area of cleanliness. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the central government for supporting Sikkim.
