At least seventeen people have died, including six army personnel, after the cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim triggered a flash flood in the Teesta river basin.
Over 90 people remained missing after a cloudburst in the early hours of Wednesday.
Here’s a look at district-wise data compiled by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA):
Mangan District: In Mangan District, four individuals have lost their lives, with 17 people reported missing. Approximately 700 residents have been evacuated from the affected areas. The disaster has also led to the washing away of eight bridges. Relief efforts are underway, with 1,715 people being accommodated at various relief camps.
Gangtok District: Gangtok District has witnessed five casualties, while 22 people remain missing. The
authorities have evacuated 1,025 residents, and three bridges have been swept away by the surging waters. Similar to Mangan District, 1,715 people have found refuge in relief camps.
Namchi District: Namchi District has reported no fatalities, but five individuals are currently missing. Approximately 630 residents have been evacuated from the affected areas, and two bridges have been washed away. A total of 2,107 people have been provided shelter at various relief camps.
Pakyong District: The most devastating impact has been felt in Pakyong District, where a total of 10 fatalities have been recorded, including six army personnel. An alarming 59 people remain missing, and 56 individuals have been evacuated from the affected areas. While no bridges were reported washed away in this district, the relief efforts have accommodated 2,107 people at various locations.
