External Affairs Ministry has said some restrictions have been imposed on the export of certain medical equipment as these items are in short supply in India as well.
Responding to a media query that India has prohibited the export of some medical items which are much needed in China, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said the precautions are in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s advisory about the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus infection. He said just like any other country, India has the responsibility to take the necessary measures to combat the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The spokesperson said
that responding to the needs of China, the government has allowed a one-time exemption for the export of some items which have been restricted for export. Further, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written to Chinese President Xi Jinping and offered assistance in the hour of need.
Mr Kumar also said that in a humanitarian gesture of medical relief, a gift reflecting the solidarity of the people of India with the people of China is expected to be delivered to Wuhan by a special flight. India has also called upon the Chinese authorities to allow Indian citizens to return by the same flight.
