A special session of both houses of Karnataka legislature has been convened today to discuss the issue of releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The state Cabinet had, on Saturday, decided to defer the release of water and convene the session. A special session is called to pass a resolution on the issue of release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The resolution is likely to oppose the constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board. It may also resolve to release some water to save the standing crops of farmers in Cauvery basin. The state government has convened the session in accordance with the opinion that emerged at the all-party
meeting on September 30.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had asked Karnataka to discharge 6,000 cusecs of water from October 1st for 6 days. It had also directed the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Management Board by Tuesday. The legislature that met on September 23, had passed a resolution that the state must utilise the 27.6 tmcft of water from four Cauvery basin reservoirs only to meet drinking water needs of Benglauru and other towns. The Opposition parties BJP and JD(S) have conveyed to the Government during all party meeting that state should not release water to Tamilnadu and oppose setting up of the Board.
