Chennai: Tamil Nadu water resources minister Durai Murugan has said that the State Government will make a demand at the Cauvery Water Management Authority's (CWMA) meeting that Karnataka should release water at the rate of 12,500 cusecs every day.
Speaking to newspersons in Chennai yesterday, he urged the Karnataka Government to release 5,000 cusecs of water as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority recently. The Minister said that both States need to work in a cooperative manner to resolve the issue and added that it would be unfair of
Karnataka not to release water as per the direction of the authority. Karnataka has cited lack of rains as a reason for the decrease in releasing water.
Karnataka has started releasing 3,000 cusecs of water from yesterday and the process will continue till the 15th of next month to Tamil Nadu. As Karnataka observed a total shutdown yesterday, Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation decided to suspend bus services beyond the State's border for 24 hours from yesterday. There were no untoward incidents in the State.
