Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has said, the state government would decide on implementing ten per cent reservation for economically weaker sections in medical education based on consensus. Intervening in the debate on the issue in the state legislature today in Chennai, he said, the government would consult the leaders of all recognized political parties and take into account the sense of the House before taking a decision about it.
Earlier, DMK President MK Stalin initiated the discussion saying reservation on the basis of economic status would liquify the concept of social justice. He said the offer of 25
per cent more MBBS seats for the implementation of the scheme is just to induce the states to follow the scheme. Congress member Prince said the move by the Centre is against the rights of the states.
In his reply, the state health minister Dr C.Vijayabhaskar said the state would get an additional 586 MBBS seats if the scheme is implemented. He said there would not be any compromise in the existing 69 per cent reservation system in the state. He added that the government would consult all the political parties and the state Advocate General before taking a call on it.
