In a significant development for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Supreme Court is set to deliberate on granting him interim bail amidst the backdrop of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been detained for over a month following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the excise policy.

Kejriwal's incarceration during this crucial electoral period has dealt a severe blow to his party's campaign efforts, leaving it grappling with the absence of its key leader.

The matter will be brought before a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta. Following his arrest on March 21, Kejriwal was transferred to Tihar jail under judicial custody after his plea challenging the ED's arrest was denied by the apex court.

The Supreme Court is slated to review Kejriwal's bail plea on Tuesday, particularly in light of the ongoing general elections.

During proceedings on May 3, the court indicated that interim bail for Kejriwal would be considered given the electoral context.

"We may not be able to conclude today. We will reconvene on Tuesday morning. Additionally, if it appears that this matter will take considerable time, we will then contemplate granting interim bail due to the electoral circumstances," the bench informed Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was concluding arguments for the day.

Meanwhile, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has recommended an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into allegations of political funding received by Kejriwal from the banned terrorist organization 'Sikhs for Justice', as reported by PTI citing sources from Raj Niwas on Monday.

The AAP has vehemently refuted these charges, dismissing the recommendation as yet another "conspiracy" orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through the Lieutenant Governor, whom they label as a BJP "agent".
