Sports Minister Vijay Goel has lashed out at the Indian Olympic Association, IOA for making Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala as Life Presidents of the sports body. During a press conference at his residence in New Delhi yesterday, Mr Goel said, it was totally unacceptable as both of them were facing serious criminal and corruption charges. Kalmadi and Chautala were yesterday made Life Presidents by the IOA at its Annual General Meeting in Chennai.
The Minister said, sports is for public good and sports governance is a public function. Mr. Goel said, he
was shocked at the resolution passed by the IOA. He said, IOA was suspended by parent International Olympic Committee for fielding charge-sheeted candidates, when Chautala and Lalit Bhanot were elected. The IOC revoked the suspension in February 2014 after the amendment in IOA Constitution.
Mr. Goel said, the Ministry has sought details from the IOA and will take appropriate action after getting a report from the IOA top brass. The Minister said, he will see how and when there will be interference, so that these people are not associated with sports.
