Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly yesterday passed a unanimous resolution against constructing the Mekedatu dam across the interstate river Cauvery by Karnataka.
State Irrigation Minister Durai Murugan moved the resolution in the House. He said, Karnataka allocating funds for the project and proposing to construct the dam without respecting the Supreme Court order of 2018 and the Cauvery Tribunal award of 2007 is unacceptable. Opposition Leader Edappadi Palaniswamy said, any construction
across the river Cauvery without the consent of the co-riparian states is against the Supreme Court verdict.
The BJP, Congress, the Left, the PMK, and all the party members in the House supported the resolution, saying, the project if implemented will leave the Delta region in the state barren.
Later, chief minister MK Stalin thanked all the party leaders for supporting the resolution by rising above party lines in one voice.
