Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has instituted a four-member committee to assist the state government in preparing an ordinance to ban online rummy game. The team is led by retired Madras High Court Justice Chanduru.
Tamil Nadu banned online gaming in November 2020. But it was struck down by the Madras High Court in August 2021 on the grounds of not justifying the act with proper data. Similar legislation by the neighbouring states also faced the same fate.
Several people recently have
reportedly lost lakhs of rupees to online rummy games and also got addicted to it. An estimate said, about 22 people ended their lives due to the addiction to online rummy game after the judiciary lifted the ban.
The deaths sparked uproar among political parties who insisted on banning the online game. To prepare the ordinance in such a way that it can stand the scrutiny of the judiciary, the state government has formed the Justice Chandru Committee.
