Teachers' Day being celebrated today

Teachers' Day is being celebrated throughout the country today. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of educationist and former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. President Ram Nath Kovind has greeted teachers on the occasion. In a message, President said, a characteristic feature of Indian culture and heritage has been Guru-Shishya Parampara. 

Various programmes have been organised especially in schools and colleges to mark the occasion. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will give away National Teachers’ Awards at a function in New Delhi. This year, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has revised the guidelines for the selection of Teachers for National Awards, 2017. 

The basic premise now is that the new scheme should be transparent, fair and reward demonstrated excellence and performance and has been inspired by recent innovations in major national awards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the winners of National Teachers' awards at his official residence yesterday. Mr Modi called upon teachers to work towards bringing out the inherent strength of students, especially those from the poor and rural areas. Prime Minister said that educators should work towards removing disconnect between teachers and students. 

The Prime Minister also encouraged the teachers to digitally transform their schools and their neighbourhood. Mr Modi congratulated the awardees for their efforts towards improving the quality of education in the country. He commended their dedication towards spreading



education. 

Extending his warm greetings and good wishes to all Teachers on the occasion of National Teachers’ Day, Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu said, teachers are nation-builders, who shape the calibre and character of the children. He said a teacher or a Guru is a source of enlightenment and empowerment. 

Paying his homage to scholar, statesman and former President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Mr Naidu said,  Dr Radhakrishnan was an intellectual giant, philosopher, an exemplary teacher and his contribution towards education is incomparable. He said the nation would be paying a fitting tribute to the great man by making the education system one of the best in the world.

In the national capital, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will confer the National Teachers' Award to 45 Teachers. The award is given as public recognition to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools. 

The awards which were instituted in 1958 carries a Silver medal, a certificate, and award money of 50 thousand rupees. This year’s awardees have been selected under revised guidelines to ensure transparent, fair and reward demonstrated excellence and performance.

In a tweet, Mr Modi said, teachers, play a vital role in the shaping of young minds and building the nation. The Prime Minister also paid tributes to former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his Birth Anniversary.
