Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rename the University of Hyderabad after former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in recognition of his services to the nation especially in the education sector. “Renaming the Hyderabad Central University as PV Narasimha Rao Central University of Hyderabad will be a fitting tribute to Narasimha Rao during his birth centenary year,” he said.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Chandrashekhar Rao said there was a strong public demand in Telangana State to rename the Hyderabad Central University after Narasimha Rao. He said the University was established in 1974 as a result of Telangana agitation during that period under the six point formula to address the imbalance in education infrastructure in Telangana region in

erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.

Chandrashekhar Rao explained that the State was celebrating the birth centenary of Narasimha Rao who was born on June 28, 1921. He said although Narasimha Rao was famously recognised as a leader who ushered in economic reforms to place a stagnant Indian economy on a high growth trajectory at a time when there was unprecedented economic crisis in 1991, the latter was a multi-faceted son of India who also contributed to the growth of the nation in several other crucial spheres.

“His contribution to education policy and setting up residential schools first at the State level and later in the form of Navodaya Schools at national level was a radical step to provide quality education to meritorious students from rural areas with poor economic background,” he added.
