Over 20 people have been killed and as many injured after a lorry crashed into a crowded market area in Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
The incident took place in Yerpedu market area under Srikalahasti division of the district, some 20 kilometres away from Tirupati.
According to preliminary reports, at least 20 people were run over by the lorry, said a police officer from Chittoor.
The people were waiting outside the police station at Yerpedu to submit their applications when the driver of a passing truck lost



control of his vehicle and crushed them under its wheels.
Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa has expressed shock over the incident.  He spoke to the Tirupati Superintendent of Police and instructed that those injured be extended the necessary medical treatment, an official said.
YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy has also condoled the loss of lives in the mishap. He has demanded that rescue efforts be expedited and immediate medical attention be provided to the injured.
